Cottars 1920s Camp

The Cottar's 1920's Safari Camp is situated in an extensive and exclusive concession between the Maasai Mara, Serengeti and Loliondo reserves where a few Purko Maasai clan roam. This area has been untouched by any kind of tourism or development and offers the discerning client a guarantee of privacy and the possibility of 'night drive' activities in their community concession. This camp gives you the authentic feel of the unique 1920's era when the word 'safari' became indelibly imprinted on the imagination of the adventurer, past and modern. Extending an era of luxury and quality, Cottars Safari Service returns to the original spirit and essence of 'safari', reminiscent of a golden era - an era of romance, professional guiding, adventure and elegance. The camp accommodates guests in three types of accommodations - 6 honey moon suites with ensuite bathrooms, 4 luxury suites with double bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms, all authentic white canvas tents, spacious and luxuriously furnished with original safari antiques from the '20's; private en suite dressing rooms and bathrooms (with old-fashioned showers and flushing toilets).

Governors Camp

The setting of Governors Camp is magical. So much so that almost a century ago it was reserved, exclusively, for Kenya's colonial Governors. Governors' Camp nestles in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, it's waters teeming with bird-life, hippo and crocodile, in the heart of Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve. Some of the 37 tents line the riverbank, tucked into the forest they enjoy uninterrupted views over the Mara River, others have views across the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara. Created in 1972 Governors' Camp set new standards in luxury for a tented camp. Everything is under canvas, all tents have en-suit bathrooms with hot and cold running water and flushing toilets. There is a bar tent with deck overlooking the Mara River and dinning tent with views over the plains.

Governors Il Moran Camp

Governors' IL Moran is for those who want that extra bit of luxury. The camp comprises just 10 tents situated along the banks of the Mara River. This exclusive camp was formerly known as Paradise Camp and originally had 20 tents. The owner's decision to reduce the size of the new camp is in direct response to their desire to preserve the surroundings and make a contribution to reduce the impact of tourists on the environment. This is probably the first time in the Mara that this has happened. IL Moran is hidden in the shadow of ancient trees. The camp recreates the atmosphere of the original hunting camps. Each room is furnished to a superior standard. The beds have been hand carved from specially selected wood from fallen, ancient olive trees. The interior of each tent also includes a Victorian style bath, flush toilet and double basins. Each tent has a large, extended verandah designed so you can take dinner in private at your tent if you wish. During the day, meals are served outdoors amongst the trees. For breakfast there are fresh fruits, cereals and hot-baked breads together with a full, cooked breakfast prepared before your eyes. For lunch, a buffet that will satisfy the hungriest appetites. In the evening guests can enjoy cordon-bleu dinners by candlelight, served with complimentary wine, deep in the bush. These are truly unforgettable experiences.

Little Governors Camp

Little Governors' is intimate in character, with just 17 luxury en-suite tents tucked around a large watering hole that teems with both birds and wildlife. The camp is approached by a boat ride across the Mara River, then an escorted walk through the riverine forest. Vehicles are left on the far river bank, and the camp is therefore quiet and undisturbed. The guest tents at Little Governors' have recently been renovated and now have great wooden decks with large verandahs for guests to enjoy the constant game activity that takes place around the watering hole at the camp. All Governors' properties are unfenced, and at Little Governors' there is a resident family of warthogs that wander freely through the camp. Guests may need to make way for elephants which sometimes visit the camp at lunch time. All the tents are comfortable and tasteful. Each has an en-suite bathroom, hot running water, even bidets. In keeping with safari tradition lighting is by gas and kerosene lanterns, or by candlelight. As dusk falls, the flickering lights in the forest make the Camp a peaceful and atmospheric place. Meals are their usual superlative standards, served, as is their style, outdoors during the day and in the candle lit dining tent by night. Come the evening it's time for chilled drinks and tall tales around the blazing campfire. Then finally a delicious dinner and a hot-water bottle to keep you warm in bed.

Mara Plains Camp

The Mara Plains Camp is small, exclusive and well-hidden within the Olare Orok Conservancy, just north of the Maasai Mara Reserve border. The position of the camp means that guests here are able to traverse three of the most spectacular wildlife areas during their stay; the Olare Orok Conservancy, the Maasai North Conservancy and the vast Maasai Mara Reserve. The Camp's extraordinary location on the banks of the Ntiakatek River affords views of the surrounding plains and verdant riverine forest. The camp is designed to minimise environmental impact, from its cement free construction, to limiting electricity usage and responsible utilisation of river water. The accommodation itself is beautiful and unique. It is reached via a swinging bridge crossing the Ntiakatek, constructed by the Mara Plains team. The main area, around which the camp is focused, is reached first. This consists of a shaded lawn leading to three marquis tents – a lounge, a library-cum-writing-area and a dining room. The dining room with its large table and grand chandelier is suffused with an old-style safari romanticism, and is a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast and dinner (if not dining al fresco.) Tea and coffees are served in the morning at your convenience, along with a complimentary sundowner cocktail each evening. Meal times are not set here, as the focus is firmly on game viewing and enjoying nature without having to worry about missing your meal or afternoon tea. Your private octagonal canvas tent will feature a raised deck veranda with sitting area and exquisite views, as well as en suite bathroom facilities including flush toilet, basins and shower with permanent hot water suply.

Mpata Safari Club

Mpata Safari Club sits high on the edge of the Oloololo escarpment with panoramic views across the Masai Mara Plains, adjoining the Masai Mara National reserve. The Club House is located in the middle of 23 separate cottages which extend like a bird wing. The architecture of Mpata Safari Club was designed by Edward Suzuki, acclaimed as one of the best architects in Japan. From each separate shirring shape unit, you can see the sun rise from the horizon of the Savannah. In the Club House is the reception, restaurant, library and bar, igniting panoramic view, and the swimming pool commanding the great grassland. The pleasure of your sundowner cocktail can be escalated by the sundowner bar set out in a well and naturally landscaped garden. Guests stay in 23 separate cottages well-spaced along the top of the escarpment. There are 11 Suites and 12 Deluxe units, each with interlocking curves separating bedrooms, bathroom and verandahs. The chief feature of the deluxe room is the panoramic sweep of the Mara which you can see from your bed. The suites have similar views and are larger with a lounge, kitchenette and, best of all, a Jacuzzi. The units are reached by stone pathways meandering between indigenous bush and trees which help to soften the towerlike structures. All meals prepared at the club are of Nouvelle Cuisine based on recipes by Kiyomi Mikuni, one of the world's greatest chefs and a founder member of Mpata Club. Breakfast has English flavor; lunch and dinner are more formal. The club has a vegetable farm within the compound and directly transfers the fresh vegetable grown by organic agriculture to the clients table on a diary basis, all complemented by fine wines and unparareled views.
